Woodie the Jeep

1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

My 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is a classic full-size SUV that blends old-school luxury with true, body-on-frame Jeep capability. Known for its iconic woodgrain trim and boxy design, it represents the final years of a legendary platform that defined American SUVs long before modern crossovers existed.

What truly sets my Grand Wagoneer apart is the drivetrain. It is powered by a 1977 AMC 360 V8, which I personally rebuilt from the ground up. I handled the teardown, inspection, and reassembly myself, ensuring proper tolerances, fresh seals, and reliable operation throughout the engine. The result is a strong, smooth-running V8 with excellent low-end torque and the unmistakable sound of a classic American engine.

The engine is matched to a rebuilt transmission, also completed by me, which significantly improves drivability and reliability compared to its original condition. Together, the rebuilt engine and transmission give my Wagoneer a renewed mechanical foundation while preserving the character that makes it special.

Key specs include:

  • Engine: Rebuilt 360 cu in (5.9 L) AMC V8

  • Transmission: Rebuilt automatic

  • Drivetrain: 4WD with transfer case

  • Chassis: Body-on-frame construction

  • Style: Classic woodgrain exterior with a spacious, comfortable interior

Overall, my 1990 Grand Wagoneer isn’t just a classic SUV—it’s a hands-on restoration project that reflects my mechanical experience and appreciation for durable, well-engineered vehicles.
